The problem

A large energy company needed to know whether workers were using their personal protective equipment (PPE) correctly, meaning the safety gear each person wears on the job. That required monitoring how the equipment was used and validating that the use was correct.

What was agreed

Prioritized scope
The project covered a set of sensors built into wearable PPE, that is, fitted into the protective equipment itself, and a mobile app connected to those sensors.

What was delivered

Workers' PPE use is monitored and validated from the equipment itself, through the app linked to the sensors.

Who it’s for

The system was built for a large energy company and concerns the workers who use wearable PPE.

How it works

The sensors sit on the very equipment the worker wears and connect to the mobile app. It is through this link that the system follows how the PPE is used.

The technology, in plain words

  • Node.js: a runtime that runs JavaScript outside the browser, widely used to build servers and APIs (the doorways through which one system hands data to another).
  • Android: Google’s operating system for phones and tablets; in this project, it is the platform of the mobile app.
  • C: a general-purpose programming language, widely used for software that runs close to the hardware, such as in electronic devices and embedded systems.

How it went

  1. Assessment

    At the start

An initial conversation to understand the client's request and problem.

  2. Discovery Sprint

    Before building

The problem was understood and the scope defined.

  3. Development

    Between 2018 and 2019

Built in incremental releases throughout the project, not all at the end.

  4. Support and continuous improvement

    After going live

The system then moved into support and maintenance.
