Illustration of an expanded accordion widget with a city picker and air quality charts

The problem

A multinational retailer needed a component that could be embedded in external websites to show the air quality of a selected city. The information had to appear in dynamic charts connected to an environmental data API, the service that provides this data.

What was agreed

Prioritized scope
An accordion component (a block that expands and collapses), designed to be embedded in external websites. In it, dynamic charts show the selected city's air quality and are connected to an environmental data API, where the information comes from.

What was delivered

External websites can embed the widget and show their visitors the selected city's air quality.

Who it’s for

For external websites that embed the widget, and for their visitors. The component was developed for a multinational retailer.

How it works

The accordion expands and collapses inside the page of the website that embeds it.

An API is the doorway through which one system hands data to another: the information the charts show comes from the environmental data API.

The technology, in plain words

  • React: a JavaScript library for building interfaces from reusable components. It was used to build the widget.
  • JavaScript: the programming language of the web, which gives pages behavior in the browser and also runs on servers. It was also used in the widget.
  • Chart.js: an open-source JavaScript library for drawing charts on web pages. In the widget, it is the technology behind the air quality charts.

How it went

  1. Assessment

    At the start

An initial conversation to understand the client's request and problem.

  2. Discovery Sprint

    Before building

The problem was understood and the scope defined.

  3. Development

    Between 2019 and 2021

Built in incremental releases throughout the project, not all at the end.

  4. Support and continuous improvement

    After going live

The widget then moved into support and maintenance.
