The problem
The project sought a way to monitor and measure vehicle flow on public roads. The plan, carried out in partnership with a public university, was to do it with an Android app based on computer vision, the field of computing in which software analyzes images.
What was agreed
- Prioritized scope
- An Android app to monitor and measure vehicle flow on public roads, in two parts: the app itself and the computer vision part, built with the OpenCV library.
What was delivered
With the app, vehicle flow on a public road is monitored and measured from the images the software analyzes.
How it works
Computer vision is the field of computing in which software analyzes images and recognizes what appears in them. In the app, the OpenCV library does that analysis, and the flow measurement comes from it.
The technology, in plain words
- Android: Google’s operating system for phones and tablets; it is the platform the app runs on.
- OpenCV: an open-source library with ready-made computer vision functions to analyze images and video; it is the base of the app’s image analysis.
How it went
Assessment
At the start
An initial conversation to understand the client's request and problem.
Discovery Sprint
Before building
The problem was understood and the scope defined.
Development
In 2016
Built in incremental releases throughout the project, not all at the end.
Support and continuous improvement
After going live
The app then moved into support and maintenance.
